ABLE Equipment Rental Rescues Clients Left Without Power From Record Rainstorm

NEW YORK - March 29, 2010 - ABLE Equipment Rental, Inc. provided multiple generators to customers in the New York City, Long Island and New Jersey areas after a massive rainstorm with 70 mph winds left nearly a half million utility customers without power from Pennsylvania to Connecticut. On Sunday, March 14th, 2010 as the storm carried on, ABLE mobilized office, sales and service staff and drivers in both their Long Island and New Jersey locations to handle all customer requests for temporary power and cable.

Shipping Distribution Center on Long Island

For the next 2-4 days ABLE crews supplied generators in sizes from 14kW to 1000kW as well as cables, aerial work platforms and high reach forklifts. ABLE used in-house drivers to transport all equipment, though transport was often delayed by downed trees and power lines. One major client that benefitted from ABLE power was a major shipping company on Long Island where a 1000kW generator was provided for their distribution center. The electrician was about to perform the switch over to the generator when a LIPA truck arrived on the scene and restored power. While the generator did not run, it provided a good dry run to judge their performance in future outages.

Funeral Home on Staten Island

A generator was also provided to a funeral home on Staten Island. The generator and temporary distribution needed to be there before the evening services started on Sunday. The ABLE mechanic performed as much pre-wiring of the temporary distribution as possible to ensure less set up time at the funeral home. Services carried on as planned.

Handling backup power in emergency situations is a challenging job where the correct size generator and voltage required for each facility must be determined prior to equipment leaving the yard. The first contact ABLE crews have is usually with the end user who may not know the specifics or requirements of the facility. Ideally, ABLE crews can fine tune which type of equipment to send after speaking with the electrician prior to leaving the yard. If the machinery is already in transit to the end user and there needs to be changes such as voltage, ABLE crews either walk the electrician through it over the phone or dispatch a mechanic directly to the facility.
